Bell Cornwell has successfully obtained planning permission from Lambeth Council for a new building at Hayman’s Gin Distillery on Weir Road. The approval paves the way for an exciting new tasting room and dedicated storage and exhibition space for Merser Rum.

Bell Cornwell LLP has achieved a significant win for the local community of Lambeth and London’s thriving craft beverage scene. The team successfully obtained planning permission from Lambeth Council for the construction of a new single-storey building at the renowned Hayman’s Gin Distillery on Weir Road in Balham. This approval paves the way for an exciting new tasting room and dedicated storage and exhibition space to be the home of Merser Rum. As well as marking a key milestone in the brand’s expansion it will enhance the area’s vibrant cultural landscape.

A Unique Destination for Rum Enthusiasts

The new facility, secured on behalf of Hayman’s of London, will serve as a dedicated tasting room where visitors can sample Merser Rum in an exceptional setting. In addition to tastings, the space will feature dedicated storage and an exhibition area, creating a one-of-a-kind destination for both locals and tourists alike. Guests will be able to explore the craft of rum-making through guided tastings, educational workshops, and community events. This further strengthens the area’s reputation as a hub for artisanal beverages.

Thoughtful Design and Community Impact
The design of the new single-storey building ensures seamless integration with the local landscape. It carefully balances modern architectural aesthetics with the industrial and urban style of the surrounding area. Carefully planned soft landscaping elements will further enhance the site’s visual appeal, contributing to the wider regeneration of the area.

The project has seen enthusiastic support from local residents, who see the new tasting room as a positive addition to the neighbourhood. The development aligns with Lambeth Council’s ongoing efforts to promote local enterprise, boost tourism, and create engaging community spaces. The new venue is set to become a key attraction for spirits enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. It also underscores Merser Rum’s commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity.

Looking Ahead
Construction of the new tasting room is set to commence in the coming months, with an anticipated opening in Autumn 2025. Bell Cornwell LLP is proud to have played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. We were able to use our expertise in navigating planning regulations and supporting businesses in their growth and development.

As this exciting project unfolds, we look forward to seeing Merser Rum’s new tasting room become a thriving addition to the Hayman’s Gin Distillery site. It will further cement London’s status as a leading destination for craft beverages.
